"CLIP College Knowledge"
We went to a Clip college knowledge hour last week on October 15. It talked about Single Stop, Career-Path and ASAP. Each speaker gave us important information about the three topics, but they not only told us about the benefits, they also gave us many useful pieces of advice. The Clip college hour always gives us the best suggestion to solve problems that we don’t know about in college.
Single Stop is an interesting program that CUNY has for students who have economic problems. We can receive free services in three different areas like Benefits Screening, Financial Counseling and Legal Assistance. Each one of these interesting points has some kind of benefits that we can receive. First of all, Benefits Screening includes important programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). Many people who join this kind of program could save money because we can receive great benefits. In addition, Health Insurance, Childcare, Housing Opportunities and Safe link Wireless are part of Benefits Screening program. Every CUNY student could be eligible for one of these programs.
A majority of people would like to have a job in their own major, but sometimes it is not easy to get that. Although there are many obstacles, fortunately, there is an opportunity which is named Career Path for people who face these challenges. The program includes jobs for students who spent two years studying Medical, Manufacturing, Green Jobs and more. While the students are attending, they can get more information at CUNYcareerpath.edu. When they finish studying, Career Path will help them get a job in their own career as soon as possible. Statistically, it may take some time to get a job, but certainly it can be a good opportunity for two year (Associate degree) students to get a job in the field they want. Career Path can be a great idea because we can increase our ability, knowledge and more.
ASAP is a helpful program for students who want to go to college. To join ASAP, students must be a NYC resident, have 15 or fewer college credits earned and a 2.0 GPA, be fully skills proficient or have no more than two development course needs. Students must also agree to study full time. Nursing and Early Childhood Education majors are not eligible. Some Benefits are free monthly Metrocards, free use of textbooks each semester, and taking summer/winter courses for free. A consolidated course schedule is a very helpful benefit to fit our busy lifestyle. If we join the ASAP program, we also receive benefits like good communication and a tuition waiver for any fees not covered by financial aid. Undocumented students may apply, but they must speak to ASAP staff for alternative documentation. The web site address to apply to ASAP is www.qcc.cuny.edu/asap.
In conclusion, the CLIP college knowledge that we received last week was about three topics: Single Stop, Career Path and ASAP. Benefits Screening, Financial Counseling and Legal Assistance are part of Single Stop. Career Path is a program that includes jobs for students who spent two years studying in Medical, Manufacturing, Green Jobs and more. ASAP helps you to get a degree in two years with everything for free. However, if you don’t work hard you will be kicked out of the program.
